(JP/ENG) 【想像力から創造力へ】美大のArt Englishのクラステーマが”Looking at Narrative Art”（ストーリー性のある作品）でしたので、その日の課題を「作品のストーリーを考えてみよう」にしました。ベタなアクティビティではありますが、想像力を鍛えるのには絶好のチャンス。そして、英文ライティングの良いトレーニングにもなるのです。
作品は風俗画を中心にいくつか選び、宗教画や神話画のように元々お決まりのストーリーがあるものは避けました。万一、画家が意図したストーリーがあったとしても、それは無視して、自分でオリジナルなものを作るようにとお願いしました。
本日がその提出日だったのですが、先ほどさらっと読んでみたところ、想像通りに皆さん、とても妄想力豊かに^^書いて下さっていて、これは楽しく採点できそうです。客観的に書かれてある文章から独白形式で書かれてあるものまで。。ヴァリエーションがあり、なんて個性的なのでしょう！
ストーリーを考えるには、細部まで作品を“視ない”といけない訳ですし、そうすることによって、観察力も洞察力も養えるのですね。普段、私たちは、実生活においても「周りのもの・こと」を意外と「しっかり視ていない」ことに気付きます。でもディテールにこそ大事な何かが隠されているのです。そして、その“何か”は、生活におけるヒントになるかもしれませんし、あるいはビジネスにおけるアイディアにつながるかもしれません。
そう、普段“見る”ことはしていても、“視て”はいないのです。
想像力をゼロからイチにする“創造力”へと発展させるには、まず視る力をつけ、クリエイティブなストーリーを文章にするところから始めるといいと思います。年代問わず、出来るアクティビティです。

ちなみに、このような課題の時は、17世紀のオランダ風俗画及び、18～19世紀のフランスものを選びます。オランダ風俗画は特に豊富に“ストーリー”系がそろっています！

Often times we “assume” that we are “seeing”, but in reality are we REALLY seeing what we are looking at? In some cases when looking at a work of art, we need to learn “how to see”. Many of us may automatically omit the details when looking at a painting. But if you are trying to figure out the story or meaning of a work, the clue is usually hidden in the minute details.
I had my students write an original narrative for a genre painting this week. I usually prepare a group of 17th century Dutch genre paintings and some 18th -19th century French paintings to choose from. The Dutch ones are the best when you want to have material that is non-Christian or Mythological. (although some may have a religious undertone or imply morality from a Christian perspective and so forth)
It is a wonderful activity for students since it encourages them to think creatively and gives them an opportunity to build writing skills in English as well. Imaginative powers would eventually lead to a creative ability, and I believe that this all begins with your skills to “see”.
