【リベラルアーツｘ西洋美術史コース】
●授業内容、目標：
In this course students will learn to discuss, communicate and questions ideas through the various resources (mainly primary sources) provided. Classes are designed in order to acquire a broad understanding of Liberal Arts, especially through the study of Art History. In the first part of the course, we will focus on Religion offering global awareness that leads to an international understanding. In a world where automation and AI are affecting certain industries, skills such as personal communication and storytelling will be necessary. Tolerance, diversity, and recognizing “different perspectives” are the key to the future, and a Liberal Arts education through Art History offers us the opportunity to become flexible and creative individuals who can “think outside of the box”. English will be used primarily with a follow-up and summary in Japanese. Text material is mainly in English, with some Japanese translation.
このコースでは、様々な資料（プライマリー・ソースなど）や作品を通して、コミュニケーションを取りながら、皆で考え、ディスカッションしていきます。西洋美術史を通して、広くリベラルアーツの知識をつけられるようにコースは構築されています。グローバルな意識を持ち、海外の方々との相互理解を深めるために、前半においては、絵画を通して宗教を学びます。ＡＩが特定の業界に影響を及ぼしている今日において、益々重要になるのは、コミュニケーション力とストーリーテリングです。合わせて、寛容力、多様性、多角的な視点、というコンセプトがこれからの時代を生き抜く力を与えてくれます。西洋美術史を通してリベラルアーツを英語で学ぶことにより、柔軟性があり、既成概念にとらわれずに物事を考えられるようになります。授業は英語中心、日本語のフォローも入れながら進めます。資料は英語中心、一部和訳あり。

1)Introduction – Liberal Arts studies through Art History
An introduction on why we should study Liberal arts and Art History in English. A quick survey on different categories in art (especially paintings) will be given in order for students to become acquainted with art historical/technical English terms.

何故西洋美術史を通してリベラルアーツを英語で学ぶ必要性があるのか考える。美術史及び美術に関する英語に慣れるため、美術史（絵画中心）における各ジャンルの作品を見ていきます。
2)The Bible and the Old Testament through Religious paintings (Part 1)
What is the Bible and how was it compiled? We will take a look at the main stories and teachings in the Old Testament, as well as some of the English words, phrases and customs that Jewish and Christians still abide by today through observing Renaissance art.
「聖書とは？」宗教画と旧約聖書（１）
ユダヤ教の正典でもあるキリスト教の旧約聖書についてルネサンス絵画を通して見ていきます。現代におけるユダヤ人やキリスト教徒が指針としている言葉や話、及び習慣などにも触れます。

6)Greek/Roman Mythology through Renaissance art
Who are some of the major gods/goddesses and stories in Greek/Roman mythology and how does it influence our art and culture today? How did Ovid’s poem influence Renaissance artists? We will read Ovid’s poem (English translation) to see how it was visualized in Renaissance paintings.

ギリシャ神話の神々の話について絵画を通して学び、また、西洋の文化や言葉に与えた影響について考えます。古代ローマの詩人、オウィディウスの詩（変身物語）をどのようにルネサンスの画家たちはヴィジュアル化したのかも見ていきます。
7)The Renaissance and Leonardo da Vinci (Part 1)

＊Discussion Topic (1): What was the Renaissance? We will discuss a chapter from the “Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy” written by Jacob Burckhardt.
＊Discussion Topic (2): We will discuss Leonardo’s portraits of women including the Mona Lisa by observing the paintings and his writings (Treatise on Painting) on how portraiture should be executed.

8)The Renaissance and Leonardo da Vinci (Part 2)
The Last Supper
＊Discussion Topic (1): We will discuss Leonardo’s “The Last Supper”. How was Leonardo able to obtain the commission from the Duke of Milan? We will read and analyze Leonardo’s letter addressed to the Duke.
＊Discussion Topic (2): How did Leonardo compare painting to sculpture? How did others evaluate the two disciplines? We will discuss by reading his journal as well as an excerpt from Baldassare Castiglione’s writing.

＊Discussion Topic (2): According to Michelangelo’s Biography written by Condivi, Pope Julius II wanted Michelangelo to decorate the Sistine Chapel ceiling rather than have him work on his Tomb. Why did Julius II change his mind about his Tomb project?

＊Discussion Topic (1): By reading about Raphael in Vasari’s “Lives of Artists”, what was your impression of Vasari’s introduction? How does Vasari think of Raphael? What kind of person was he, and how did he compare Raphael’s art to that of Leonardo and Michelangelo?
＊Discussion Topic (2) : What was Vasari’s advice to artists in general? Compare with the advice given earlier on by Alberti. Compare the situation to artists living in the present day. Think about how it might relate to current artist/patron relationships.
